A Language for Deaf & Hearing Impaired
Smart to know
American Sign Language has been in use in the United States since the early 1800s by the deaf and hearing impaired. It stands as a language in itself, separate from English. ASL has its own proud history and development, using signs, manners and gestures that incorporate all aspects of a person’s being. Some signs are used that appear the same as others but are made distinct by body movement and facial expression. Just as in English, there are regional and geographic differences.
