Gary Falk
Tenor, Baritone and Soprano saxophone. Flute.
Gary Falk started studying the clarinet in elementary school in Chicago in the mid-1950s and then studied privately in the city with Bruno Michelotti a leading music educator. He played with the popular Stardusters band - a number of young musicians from Chicago's north side. Click on the image for its title and description.
After moving to Kentucky in 1960, he started playing tenor saxophone with bands such as the Wellingtons around Lexington and also became a part of the night club scene in that city. He played at such places as the Fireplace Lounge which was popular with University of Kentucky students. The Camelot Lounge, Embers Inn, Jockey Club, Jim Alfred's Club, The LaFlame and Terrace Room were some of the places where he regularly played, mostly with four or five piece groups providing music for dancing.
Coming to Louisville in 1969, Gary played extensively in the Louisville Music Scene, playing jazz at Joe's Palm Room with the Boogie Morton Band, in the house band at the Down's Cafe' Paddock Lounge and Jim Dandy's Club, with the Woody Bates (organ) trio for nearly two years at the popular Holiday Inn South and countless other jazz and dance venues.
In 1982 he became part of vocalist Gayle King's band Indigo, playing in clubs and private parties throughout the city. He also worked for over 20 years in the ten-piece Pendulum Orchestra and at various times was part of theatre orchestras at Actor's Theatre, Derby Dinner Playhouse and the Kentucky Center for the Arts. He also played for a time with the Louisville Orchestra in the pops concerts series.
Gary is a veteran of both the Air Force and of the 202nd Army Band. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He and his wife, Dorissa, are entering their fifth decade of marriage. Their sons, Andrew and Robert, have families and active careers in music and engineering.
